Composite of Cellulose-Nanofiber-Reinforced Cellulose Acetate Butyrate: Improvement of Mechanical Strength by Cross-Linking of Hydroxyl Groups

A great challenge hindering the use of cellulose nanofibers (CNF) as a reinforcing filler in bio-based polymeric matrices are their poor chemical compatibility. This is because inherent hydrophilic nature CNF and hydrophobic matrix. In this study, laminates were prepared by using acetate butyrate (CAB) polymer To improve compatibility between CAB CNF, residual hydroxyl groups on surface cross-linked with bio-derived polyisocyanurate D376N (STABiO™). The composite material was obtained one step sandwiching sheet (10 wt%) coated cross-linking agent films (90 hot pressing. When 14.3 wt% to total weight added, tensile strength flexural improved 72.4% 16.3%, respectively, compared neat CAB. It concluded that increase result both: sheets well occurring at CNF/CAB interface.
